Mark Holden    Interesting art exhibitions Mark has been invited to since he started entering competitions with ShowArtists. 2011 Mixed Media Art Competition, Lessedra Gallery, Sophia, Bulgaria 2011 "On the Edge", curated by Paola Trevisan, Galleria De' Marchi, Bologna, Italy, group 2011 "P A N D E M I C", curated by Alana Tortuga, week long art festival across Sheffield, UK 2011 "Pop-Up Show", Americanflat @ The Dressing Room, New York City, Group 2011 "DJ Series", Open Gallery of Art & Architecture, Toronto, solo of Turntable Series According to Mark, "ShowArtists has been worth it as a lot of people have seen my work there and contacted me for shows, or to sell prints of paintings like on www.americanflat.com and ShowArtists has featured my work in a few issues and has granted me an award for my series of paintings of turntables. I am also currently working on my Facebook portrait series. This past year I have been very productive doing over 120 paintings. My upcoming shows are in Windsor ON (near Detroit) in June and I will be showing some turntable paintings at GZ Art Basel in June as well and I have a number of other things planned as well. Thank you to ShowArtists for the encouragement and the exposure of my work!" In Mark's own words, read this astonishing chain of events that happened to Mark just after entering a ShowArtists Art Competition and winning a Silver Award. 1) Paola Trevisan from Italy organizes shows, her site is http://www.trevisan-international-art.com/artists.html  here is a link to Trevisan International Art, after I received the award from ShowArtists is when she asked me to participate in a miniature show.  Every artist had to do 4 small pieces the same size which made for an interesting show in Bologna, Italy.  The show "On the Edge" can be seen here: http://www.trevisan-international-art.com/events.html   Tons of great artists here. 2) Marina Reiter saw my work on the ShowArtists site, she is one of the partners of American Flat, where they sell prints of artworks in New York.  They picked 2 images, the link is here:  http://www.americanflat.com/artist/mark-holden/  There are also many great artists there to browse. 3) Georgi Kolev from Lessedra Gallery, Sofia, Bulgaria, saw my work online, and asked me to be a part of the miniature show (miniature shows are fun and great because shipping is a low cost)  the link for that show is http://www.lessedra.com/previous.php?exh_id=57     The main gallery page is http://www.lessedra.com/   A lot of great artists here. 4) I won a Certificate of Excellence for The Palm Art Award from Art Domain in Leipzig, Germany, just a few months after I started submitting work to ShowArtists.  The link is here to see the 2011 winners:  http://www.palm-art-award.com/winners2011.html  Lots of great artists here too... 5) I was contacted by GaleriaZero to exhibit my art at the prestigious GZ-Art Exhibition in Basel, Switzerland this June. "Thank you for mentioning me and showing my artwork in your latest edition of ShowArt Magazine.  Carolus (of GaleriaZero) contacted me in January and asked me to be a part of  the 2012 Basel Art Fair and I am really grateful and happy about that. I am submitting 4 smaller paintings from the turntable series which I have called the Groove series which I haven't shown anyone except on facebook.  They have more of a Hip Hop feel to them."   Mark Holen Mark is happy to share with us his artistic inspiration and unique way of working. "My paintings in the DJ Series are fun Expressionist-Pop works of record players.  I wanted to bring art and music together in a colorful almost abstract style, so I chose the record player as a symbol because it looks more interesting than an MP3 player and I love the look of vinyl records.  I used oil paint, spray paint and graffiti markers, as it goes with the DJ/Hip Hop culture of spinning records in clubs. I started the first painting in 1999 and finished it off in 2010.  Since then I have done many in the DJ Series in various versions of the series.  Some I did in batches of 4 or 5 or 10 throughout March/2011 to now.  The process to do one takes several days as first I use spray paint, then let it dry, then paint in the colors, let it dry, then paint in the black colors, then let it dry, then use the permanent oil markers and let it dry.  So, since it took so long to do one that is why I decided to do them in batches, often spending all day on several at once." Check out Mark's newest work: Facebook #11 can be seen with more close-up photos at http://www.markholden.info/Facebook11WinterwithKaren.html "This Facebook painting is a profusion of images in a visual compositional structure, composed as if each block of portraits was a piece in a musical composition, working together to form a cohesive whole.  Often the connections between people on Facebook are also a symphonic compositional structure, as each connection is made on facebook, it leads on to new connections in a broad spider web of people, or images all caught within one structure.  In the past Facebook paintings I have made, I have chosen random people to paint from my own facebook friends list.  Though this painting was the facebook family and close friend connections of one couple. If you would like to view other artworks please see my website at www.markholden.info."
